Avoiding fires after the storm (golf carts, e-bikes, electric cars)

This good advice is from The Tampa Bay Times:

“Lithium-ion batteries, such as those in electric vehicles, including golf carts and electric bikes, pose a fire risk after being exposed to saltwater,” Pinellas spokesperson Kelsey Grentzer wrote in a statement.

Residents with electric vehicles, e-bikes or golf carts are asked to park them in areas where they will not be exposed to saltwater, and all vehicles are asked to avoid driving through standing water. Tampa has made city parking garages free until Thursday.

Any lithium-ion battery that has been exposed to water should not be disposed in normal trash. Battery manufacturers have specific disposal instructions.

Electric vehicles exposed to saltwater should be moved at least 50 feet away from homes as they run the risk of causing fires in the days following the initial exposure. The vehicles may need to be towed to a dealership after the storm.
