Our remarkable neighborhood recovery

From that awful night of September 26th, then again October 9th our neighborhood has been in recovery mode. And what a wonderful site it is to see our streets clear, most of the debris now out of our yards, and here and there, holiday lights are shining. Who would have thought that we would have holiday lights glimmering on our bridge that only two months ago was in pieces?

The one image that struck us, driving through our neighborhood, was a Christmas nativity display on the same front lawn as the last of the storm debris piles. It is the personification of Peace on Earth returning.

Take a few minutes and enjoy the boring normalcy of a street that is not bordered by piles of limbs and wet sofas. Take a moment to remember the teams of people who chainsawed, hauled tree trunks, mucked drywall that was anything but dry and thank the skilled workers who are rewiring our homes and repairing our walls.

We are recovering. And when we recover, we will be stronger and more prepared for the future.
Stand by your neighbors who have endured and still are enduring the frustrations of the permitting and reconstruction process. Many have suffered tremendous financial strains. Some have delayed retirement to keep working and paying the bills.

But despite it all, neighbors are stringing up holiday lights, maybe not as big and bright as in previous years, but they will return.

Take time to be thankful, and enjoy the sunshine that blesses our winter months. We endure the storms to reap the warmth of this season that sends shivers to our northern neighbors.

Breathe in the boringly beautiful sight of empty streets.
